50th minute: A burst of pace from Cody Gakpo earns the Netherlands a corner, but Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy gathers it comfortably. 48th minute: The Dutch didn't qualify for the last World Cup but they arrived at this one in confident mood. Coach Louis van Gaal, who led them to the semi-finals and a third-place finish in 2014, openly stated his belief that they have a “great chance of becoming world champions” in Qatar.
Senegal vs. Netherlands final score, result: Gakpo and Klaassen strike late in World Cup 2022 Group A matchCody Gakpo's late header and a 99th-minute strike from substitute Davy Klaassen put Netherlands in pole position to qualify as Group A winners as they condemned Senegal to a dispiriting defeat in their opening 2022 World Cup match. The contest between the two highest-ranked teams in the group looked to be heading for a drab goalless draw until Gakpo rose highest to glance home Frenkie De Jong's floated ball into the area ahead of Edouard Mendy.
No other member of the squad is into double figures – Davy Klaasen is the next highest on nine – but Vincent Janssen, who starts today, has a reasonable record with seven goals in 20 caps to date. Look out too for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old is reportedly being watched by most of Europe’s major clubs, so a decent World Cup could put a move firmly on the radar. 10 mins from kickoff: Senegal’s hopes of matching their feat of 2002, when they stunned holders France and reached the last eight on their first appearance at the finals, were dealt a major blow last week when Sadio Mane, who finished second in this year’s Ballon D’Or vote, was ruled out with a knee injury which required surgery.
In the absence of the former Liverpool star, the likes of Boulaye Dia, who is on loan with Salernitana in Italy’s Serie A, and Watford striker Ismaila Sarr will be expected to shoulder the goalscoring burden. But even without Mane, Senegal have plenty of top-level talent in their ranks. Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly captains a side also featuring clubmate and goalkeeper Eduardo Mendy, while the midfield includes Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye, the most capped player in the Lions squad with 95, Leicester City’s Nampalys Mendy and Cheikhou Kouyate of Nottingham Forest.
The Chelsea goalkeeper also might have done better in the ninth minute of injury time as he could only parry a weak effort from Memphis Depay into the path of fellow Dutch substitute Davy Klaassen, who swept home the clinching goal. Senegal looked relatively toothless in attack in the absence of their talisman and top scorer Sadio Mane, ruled out of the tournament after knee surgery.
He is replaced by Marseille striker Bamba Dieng as the Indomitable Lions look for greater punch up front. 65th minute: Half a chance for Senegal striker Boulaye Dia on the turn, which brings a comfortable save out of debutant Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert at his near post. 62nd minute: Here comes Memphis Depay, who has 42 goals from 81 caps but hasn't played for two months after a hamstring injury. Can he inject some quality into this game? Abdou Diallo has not recovered from that knock by the way, and is replaced by Ismail Jakobs.
9th min: End to end stuff as next it's Senegal's Cheikhou Kouyate who tries his luck at goal, but the Nottingham Forest midfielder's left-foot effort drifts harmlessly over. 7th min: A good ball is whipped into the Netherlands box which just eludes the outstretched leg of Senegal's Pape Abou Cisse. Bright start this from the African champions. 5th min: It's an open start here with both teams showing good attacking intent in these opening exchanges. Promising for the Dutch as Cody Gakpo find himself in a good position but he takes an extra touch and the chance is gone.
Both sides looking vulnerable at the back, but we're still goalless as we reach the half-hour mark. 26th min: Corner to the Netherlands at the other end. Virgil Van Dijk rises highest but can only direct his header wide of the target. 24th min: Close! Great bit of skill from Senegal forward Ismaila Sarr, who drops his shoulder on the left of the box and whips in a curling effort which looks to be heading in before Virgil Van Dijk heads it over for a corner. 19th min: Another opportunity for the Dutch! Frenkie De Jong finds himself in space in the Senegal area and transfers the ball onto his right foot to shoot, but a defender nips in to clear. 16th min: The Netherlands produce a flowing move down the right but Senegal manage to clear the danger. But straight away Cody Gakpo swings in a dangerous cross to the far post where Daley Blind gets above Youssouf Sabaly but his header drifts wide of the post.
41st min: Senegal with a chance to create something from a free-kick to the left of the penalty area, but Idrissa Gueye's delivery doesn't beat the first defender. Poor from the Everton man. 39th min: Lovely move from the Dutch after Frenkie De Jong brings the ball out from the back. It comes to Vincent Janssen on the edge of the area, but his left-footed snap-shot flies narrowly over. 33rd min: Straight back up the other end, and Youssouf Sabaly drills in a right-foot effort from distance but that's not troubling Andries Noppert, making his debut in the Netherlands goal. 32nd min: The Netherlands with a free-kick in a good position on the right of the area, 30 yards out. Cody Gakpo swings it in with his right foot, but Senegal clear that one with ease. 28th min: This time it's Senegal with another sight at goal, but Idrissa Gueye drags his shot well wide.
They've not quite looked like justifying that status so far... 46th minute: The players are back out at the Al Thumana Stadium and we'll go again... We'll have two minutes of added time at the end of this first half.
20 mins from kickoff: The Dutch fans are always a colourful presence and after missing out on the last World Cup, it's no surprise to find the oranje in full effect once more in Qatar. 🚌 #SENNED, 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦! 🔜🏟#NothingLikeOranje #WorldCup pic. com/VYdNgn9JZ2 — OnsOranje (@OnsOranje) November 21, 2022 30 mins from kickoff: This is the first of eight games to be staged at the Al Thumana Stadium – a 40, 000-seater arena close to the Hamad International Airport on the southern side of Doha. Its circular design and white exterior was apparently inspired by the ghafiya hat, a traditional woven cap worn by men and boys across the Middle East.
60th minute: As Senegal's Abdou Diallo receives some treatment, it looks like the Netherlands are readying Memphis Depay for action. 58th minute: The game has gone a little stale but Senegal spring into life, a ball in from the left reaching Krepin Diatta at the far post, but the striker is always stretching and can't divert it goalwards. 53rd minute: Another Netherlands corner, and this is a chance! But Virgil Van Dijk heads it over. The Liverpool defender would have expected to do better than that.
1st min: Nervous start from the Netherlands! Virgil Van Dijk loses possession in the Dutch half, Senegal's Ismaila Sarr cuts the ball in from the left and Boulaye Dia gets a shot off that Frenkie De Jong deflects for a corner. 1 min from kickoff: The two captains are shaking hands in the centre circle, and we're about to get underway. It's the Netherlands to kick off... let's go! 5 mins from kickoff: It's time for the anthems at the Al Thumama stadium. We'll start with Senegal and 'The Red Lion', followed by the Netherlands' 'Wilhelmus'... 7 mins from kickoff: If Senegal are without Mane, the Netherlands are also weakened by the absence of Memphis Depay, far and away the most prolific striker in their squad with 42 goals from 82 caps.
Pape Gueye directs one to the near post... Noppert stretches his 6ft 8in frame and saves with his left hand. And now he's claimed a cross. Best international career I've ever seen.
